I was so grateful that Tiwani Contemporary, a London-based gallery which specialises in contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, allowed me to print this powerful painting on the first page of my PhD thesis. This painting by Virginia Chihota inspired me to get on with the job and finish. Zimbabwe-born Chihota once described her art practice as a 'reflection on self-discovery in constantly changing circumstances'. She gave this painting the name 'kuzvirwisa (fighting self)'. It was part of her second solo exhibition 'Come Forth as Gold'. The exhibition title is a reference to a passage in the Old Testament Book of Job, in which Job, tested by God, 'compares himself to gold that is tried in a crucible and comes forth purer following the application of fire'. — December 2019
